Honors Internship Program, Summer 2021
The Law Department's varied divisions offer summer interns hands-on practical experience. Interns regularly draft motion papers and briefs that are filed in court. Many take or defend depositions. The intern will be placed in the Special Federal Litigation division. Will conduct legal research, draft motions and/or motion points, review case files and prepare settlement abstracts for purposes of obtaining authority to engage in settlement negotiations. Interns draft deposition questions and likely attend the deposition with the staff attorney. Will have the opportunity to attend initial court conferences, status conferences and settlement conferences before a federal judge or magistrate judge in the Eastern or Southern District Courts. When the opportunity arises, interns may observe division attorneys try cases in federal court. Each summer intern is assigned a mentor. Each intern should receive several major assignments during the summer with different attorney supervisors. The number and nature of assignments vary by division. Should be enrolled in an accredited US or Canadian law school. The interns should work eight of the nine weeks of program, which normally starts the first Monday in June and ends the first Friday in August. Second year summer interns will be preferred.
Note: Weekly stipends of $750 are offered to all second-year summer interns and most first-year summer interns. Out-of-town law student interns may be eligible for free summer housing.
