Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Senior Environmental Attorney to join its team in Syracuse, NY. This role involves advising clients on complex environmental regulations, managing permitting processes, and supporting large-scale infrastructure and energy projects. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in environmental law, regulatory compliance, and transactional matters to a collaborative practice group.

Duties

• Advise clients on federal and state environmental regulations, including CERCLA, CAA, RCRA, and SEQRA.



• Represent clients in environmental permitting, compliance, enforcement, and regulatory matters.



• Lead environmental due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and commercial real estate transactions.



• Draft and negotiate environmental provisions within purchase, sale, financing, and development agreements.



• Manage permitting and approval processes for air, water, wetlands, energy, and infrastructure projects.



• Advise on remediation strategies, risk mitigation, and Brownfield redevelopment projects.



• Review Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments and technical environmental reports.



• Counsel clients on ESA compliance, land use issues, utility proceedings, and habitat conservation.



• Provide strategic guidance on NYC Local Law 97, CLCPA compliance, and carbon market initiatives.



• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to evaluate environmental risks and project feasibility.

Requirements

• Minimum of 8 years of experience practicing U.S. environmental law.



• Significant experience in energy, infrastructure, or large-scale development projects.



• Admission to the New York State Bar is required.



• Experience with cross-border matters and international infrastructure projects is desired.



• Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and with diverse stakeholders.

Education

• Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school.

Certifications

• Active license to practice law in New York State.



• Connecticut or Massachusetts admission, or ability to waive in, is a plus.

Skills

• In-depth knowledge of NEPA, CERCLA, RCRA, ESA, UIC, and related regulatory frameworks.



• Ability to analyze technical environmental data and advise on legal and business implications.



• Experience managing regulatory timelines and coordinating with governmental agencies and consultants.



• Strong understanding of environmental risk allocation and deal structure frameworks.



• Excellent communication, client service, and business judgment skills.
