Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a senior-level Appellate Attorney to join its litigation practice in San Diego, California. This part-time position requires an anticipated commitment of approximately 20 hours per week and focuses on handling appeals throughout the complete appellate process. The attorney will manage sophisticated appellate matters from the notice of appeal through final resolution, including brief preparation and oral argument.

Duties:

• Manage appellate matters from the filing of a notice of appeal through final resolution.
• Review trial court records and identify issues appropriate for appellate review.
• Develop appellate strategies based on the record, applicable law, and procedural requirements.
• Conduct comprehensive legal research and analysis on complex appellate issues.
• Draft, review, and finalize appellate briefs and other written submissions.
• Prepare and file motions and other documents required during appellate proceedings.
• Prepare for and present oral arguments before appellate courts.
• Handle appeals before California appellate courts.
• Assist with appellate matters before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, as applicable.
• Monitor filing requirements and ensure compliance with appellate deadlines and court rules.
• Collaborate with litigation attorneys regarding appellate strategy and preservation of issues for review.
• Provide clear and persuasive written and oral advocacy throughout appellate proceedings.

Requirements:

• More than 10 years of legal practice experience.
• Significant experience handling appellate matters.
• Experience with all stages of appellate proceedings in California appellate courts is strongly preferred.
• Experience practicing before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit is preferred.
• Recognition as a California appellate specialist is preferred.
• Active California Bar membership.
• Strong academic credentials.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative legal environment.
• Availability to work approximately 20 hours per week.

Education and Certifications:

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
• Active license to practice law in California.
• California appellate specialist certification or recognition is preferred.
