Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Litigation Attorney to join its Smithtown, NY office. This fully on-site role involves representing clients in state and federal courts, arbitration, and administrative proceedings across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The position handles complex civil and commercial matters on both hourly and contingency bases, offering significant responsibility for case strategy and execution.

Duties

• Represent plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal courts, private arbitration, and administrative proceedings.


• Manage a caseload of 25 to 35 matters, handling discovery, motions, depositions, and trial preparation.


• Analyze complex factual records to develop litigation strategies and produce persuasive legal arguments.


• Collaborate with partners and staff to advance client positions through substantive, high-quality work.


 

Requirements

• Three to eight years of litigation experience in a law firm setting.


• Active admission to the New York State Bar.


• Experience with complex civil and commercial disputes, including commercial, employment, or trust and estate litigation.


• Strong legal research and writing skills with attention to factual, procedural, and billing details.


 

Education

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.


 

Certifications

• Admission to practice law in New York is required.


• Admission in New Jersey, Connecticut, federal court, or appellate courts is preferred but not required.


 

Skills

• Ability to concentrate on difficult records and manage competing deadlines without losing track of details.


• Comfort with modern legal technology and AI-assisted tools used responsibly.


• Strong judgment regarding when to work independently and when to seek guidance.


• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain recommendations clearly and thoughtfully.
