The role
The Department of French in the School of Modern Languages at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. seeks to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer (Grades J -L, Pathway 1) in French. We are looking for a social, political or cultural historian in the broad field of French Studies, with a preference for the modern and/or contemporary period. The successful candidate is expected to strengthen School and Faculty strategy towards decolonization.  Additional expertise in digital, environmental or medical humanities would be an asset, but we welcome applications from a wide range of areas. We are looking above all for a colleague who has intellectual breadth and agility, and an aptitude for interdisciplinary dialogue.
What will you be doing?
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute fully to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes of the Department of French and the School of Modern Languages. They will pursue research of the highest international quality in their area of specialism through active collaborations both within French Studies and in wider interdisciplinary initiatives. The successful candidate will assume responsibility for an appropriate share of administration.

The successful applicant will have a strong, well-developed research profile beyond doctoral level, with an established record of, or evidence of the potential for, high-quality publishing and external grant capture. They will have a record of leadership in research and teaching commensurate with their career stage. They will have first-language or equivalent command of French and the ability to contribute to French language teaching at all levels, especially translation.
The Department of French in the School of Modern Languages combines excellence in teaching with a lively research culture. Key research areas include:
Pre-modern literature and cultural studies
Postcolonial literary and visual cultures, including film
Nineteenth-century and twentieth-century literature and visual culture
Sociolinguistics
Modern social and political history and thought
Comparative literatures and cultures
We are seeking a colleague who will expand the Department’s areas of strength and play a full part in the research culture of the School and the Faculty of Arts. Current priorities at School and Faculty level include the decolonization of our teaching and research, the development of our degree programmes in Comparative Literatures and Cultures, and engagement with the creative, cultural and heritage sectors. We foster postgraduate and post-doctoral research of the highest quality, and we are committed to developing the research activities of individual members of staff. We offer pro-active support to ensure that colleagues make an appropriate career progression.
