Reporting directly to the Head of Library Research Services, the Empirical Research Services Librarian has additional duties that include: Meets requests of Georgetown Law faculty members or administrators for research support and negotiates completion dates of a memo or other deliverable, coordinating the accomplishment of the project by assigning projects to student employees or completing the project personally, as appropriate. Analyzes and evaluates legal and interdisciplinary materials, synthesizes factual findings, and composes memoranda to faculty to communicate research results. Provides empirical research support, including developing research designs, acquiring data sets, and performing statistical analysis. Works with the department’s document delivery service, troubleshooting problems that arise and personally performing document delivery tasks when appropriate. Works with other members of the library liaison program to manage completion of research projects received through the liaison program. Takes responsibility, with other departmental librarians, for coordinating and overseeing a team of student research assistants for assistance with projects, particularly advanced student assistance with statistical, econometric, or other data. Supervises students who may be at the graduate level and would be working with statistical software or programs. Reviews the work product of others in the department and provides each with constructive feedback focusing on research methodologies and strategies. Upon requested, supervises the other members of the library research services staff. Participates in the activities of the law library, law center, university, and professional associations by serving as a committee member or volunteer. Serves as a liaison to designated faculty members and law center institutes, functioning as the primary point of library contact for these designated faculty members. Manages the regular meetings with assigned faculty members to assess these faculty members’ research and scholarship needs, and to develop proactive services for these faculty members. Understands these patrons’ areas of teaching and research, providing advanced and refresher online training sessions. Participates in developing and administering a thorough research training program for students employed as research assistants, focusing on departmental policies and procedures, advanced research techniques, legal reference bibliography, online database skills, research methodology, and topical research instruction. Provides training when required to library colleagues or faculty personal research assistants in specialized statistical or econometric software in which the incumbent is proficient. Identifies additional training opportunities to meet needs in empirical research. Provides reference and research assistance through scheduled reference desk rotations and assigned consultations for students. Shares knowledge of both legal and interdisciplinary research sources and methods including international, foreign, and comparative law. Provides service on scheduled evenings and weekends as well as during normal business hours. Serves as a subject specialist in assigned subject areas, particularly social science and other empirically driven subject areas, and evaluates collections and makes collection recommendations in these areas, when neccessary. Collaborates with the library’s selection team to develop collection policies and selection decisions affecting purchases, retention, weeding, storage, serials and electronic information databases.
