Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor, Director
Duties: Annually place law students in summer externships in public defender offices throughout Wisconsin; conduct student recruiting for those positions (applications, interviewing, etc.); train attorneys in public defender offices in their responsibilities for supervising law students in the Public Defender Project. Develop and maintain relationships with Wisconsin public defender offices and other indigent defense stakeholders. Work with state and federal public defenders to provide training and educational assistance through presentation at conferences and the provision of other services. Design and teach classroom components of Public Defender Project (currently consisting of two spring pre-placement classes and one fall post-placement class). Teach other classes relating to substantive criminal law or criminal procedure. Monitor student placements in the summer externships throughout Wisconsin; visit placement sites; provide work-related/ethical support where appropriate. Perform administrative duties connected to the project, including the negotiation, collection, and distribution of student stipends and administering the authorization-to-practice process for law students.
