Distinguishing Characteristics
The Deputy Sheriff Recruit-Trainee class is an entry Academy training level classification. Under close supervision, incumbents typically train and report to a journey level Deputy Sheriff or Sergeant, and attend Basic Peace Officer Standard Training (POST) academy to learn the principles, methods, and techniques employed by the Deputy Sheriff class. Positions in this class are distinguished from Deputy Sheriff in that the Deputy Sheriff Recruit-Trainee is a non-sworn class, which has no peace officer powers. Deputy Sheriff Recruit-Trainees are eligible for promotion to Deputy Sheriff upon successful completion of a Basic Peace Officer Standard Training academy usually within one year of hire. Incumbents who do not successfully complete academy training and promote to Deputy Sheriff will be terminated from the Recruit-Trainee classification.
