General Counsel & Director of Risk Management

DUTIES: Provides advice and counsel on employment, student, and faculty governance issues. Reviews federal, state and local laws applicable to College operations and provides guidance to the President, the Senior Team, and the Board of Trustees in order to ensure compliance. Proactively raises legal issues and concerns to the attention of administration. Reviews proposed changes to College policies and procedure, responsible for creating new policies and procedures as needed. Represents the College in claims before state and federal regulatory agencies. Manages litigation, hires and manages outside counsel where appropriate. Reviews and prepares a wide variety of contracts including real estate contracts and leases, affiliation agreements for student clinical training, licensing agreements, vendor contracts, and grant agreements. Represents the College in real estate transactions, litigation, and settlements, and other issues of real property and land use. Develops and conducts training for various audiences on areas of legal significance or risk. Oversees risk management and serves as Risk Manager for the college, with a focus on development of policies and procedures aimed at mitigating risk. Negotiates and oversees renewal of liability insurance policies and conducts contract review. Prepares and/or contributes to the preparation of reports, briefings, presentations, and responses on institutional and strategic issues.
