Director of Research Development
The candidate will provide leadership direction to assigned staff in the program area, and oversee subordinate staff with program responsibility including grant writers (up to 3, PhD/MD trained) and grant specialist / research administrator(s). Will design, develop, and oversee implementation of the Department’s research building activities, e.g., internal grant review processes, seed grant programs, grantsmanship curricula, workshops, seminars, multi-week bootcamps, relevant executive-level research committee(s), etc. Devise and implement vision, strategy, goals, and resource development to improve the quality and quantity of proposals submitted to federal and non-federal sponsors. Lead and oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements to shape research development program. Define the overall activities of research/ teaching program(s), allocate appropriate staffing and other resources to advise postdocs/fellows and junior faculty writing grants. Develop and direct related policies to streamline research development and research administrative processes. Coordinate grant proposal submissions. Devise strategies to improve engagement of current faculty with mentoring junior faculty, especially in research and writing grants. Develop and implement programming that cultivates the next generation of exceptional faculty mentors. Provide strategic and financial advice to faculty director and/or senior management. Develop, maintain, and control the financial strategy and long-range financial planning for the Department’s research development enterprise. Measure impact of investment in research building activities in improving quality and quantity of the Department’s proposals. Serve as the principal advocate with foundations, funding, and gift sources. Advocate research development priorities for the Department to broader university, external communities, sponsors, and other stakeholders. Other duties may also be assigned.
