Title
Graduate School Fellowship
Office of Legislative Research
Connecticut General Assembly
Hartford
Salary Range:
$115.12 per day
Hours:
15-20 hours per week
General Description
The Connecticut General Assembly’s Office of Legislative Research (OLR) seeks qualified, current graduate school students to help its staff conduct nonpartisan policy and legal research for the 2023 legislative session, which runs from January 4, 2023, to June 9, 2023. Selected candidates will perform timely research for legislators proposing new laws and policies during the legislative session. Seasoned OLR analysts, who are either attorneys or hold other graduate degrees, will provide the fellows with training and review all draft research reports and other work products. Finished reports will be delivered to legislators and published on the OLR website. Fellows’ published work provides a great source of writing samples for future professional use. OLR fellows have gone on to employment in all three branches of Connecticut state government, with federal agencies, and in private law practice or industry.
Selected students will be required to work 15 to 20 hours per week. The fellowship is paid and participants may also earn credit from their college or university.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Candidates for the fellowship should possess excellent writing and analytical skills and, by the start of the fellowship, must have completed at least one semester of course work in a graduate degree program in public administration, government, law, public policy, political science, criminal justice, or a related field.
Graduate Fellowship Program — Testimonials
“Working at OLR as a Graduate Fellow is incredibly rewarding. Everyone in the office cares about their work, about their colleagues, and about the legislative process. Though the fellowship lasted only a matter of months, everyone at OLR welcomed me, provided me with in-depth training and feedback, and assured me that my work was appreciated. I can’t recommend the fellowship enough. My time at OLR has made me a better writer, researcher, and professional.”
-- Alison Walker

“If you’re seeking a challenging and rewarding experience this is the one for you. An OLR fellowship is a great way to garner first-hand knowledge of the legislative process while enhancing your research and writing skills. OLR goes above and beyond in preparing and training you to be a successful analytical writer and provides fellows with writing samples for future internships and employment opportunities. I would strongly encourage any law student with an interest in government and public policy to take the time to apply.”
