Profile

About the Position
CQ Roll Call seeks a versatile and experienced journalist with excellent news judgment and superior editing skills who can shape and polish content for all CQ Roll Call platforms and products.
This editor will be part of the production team and edit breaking news and enterprise about policy and politics in partnership with assignment editors. This role is what some newsrooms would call a news editor or an editor-at-large - someone with responsibilities that include copy editing and production duties and, on occasion, assignment editing, content editing and team supervision.
This editor is an excellent wordsmith who can write sharp headlines and alerts and can produce smart website updates and engaging social media posts. You can expect to help with newspaper production and website management, including updating home fronts and web pages. This editor will also be called on to occasionally manage a team when an assignment editor is away.
The team is responsible for copy editing, management of two websites and two content management systems, production of newsletters and a newspaper when Congress is in session, preparation of documents made available to subscribers, audience engagement through social media, and other news-related functions for the CQ and Roll Call brands.
The schedule will vary but will likely begin at noon or 1 p.m., with some occasional late nights and weekend hours. Generally, you'll start your day after most assignment editors so the workload at busy times of the day is spread more evenly.
About the CQ Roll Call Team
Washington's CQ Roll Call brings up-to-date news, analysis and insights to senior decision-makers on Capitol Hill. This trusted source of unbiased, impartial information provides authoritative, nonpartisan and accurate congressional news and legislative tracking tools to its subscribers. Through more than 40 print and online products, CQ Roll Call offers insight on the people and institutions that influence public policy and legislation, keeping readers updated on a weekly, daily and real-time basis with coverage of every legislative action in Congress via breaking news, bill tracking, and member profiles.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Please upload four (4) published stories from news websites or newspapers and describe how you polished or shaped the content. These stories should also include samples of headlines you wrote.
Candidates will be required to take an AP-style test and a test of congressional knowledge.
What to Expect in this Position:
Edit stories, briefs and newsletters to meet CQ's standards for quality and excellence
Work with assignment editors to ensure story assignments are followed and executed by reporters, and help sharpen content before publication. Sometimes you'll do the first edit of breaking news stories and occasionally write them
Edit content for the CQ and Roll Call websites including, but not limited to, news stories, briefs, newsletters, text files accompanying video and audio assets, and other content at the request of assignment and production editors. This is usually a second edit, but sometimes is a first edit
Write sharply focused headlines, cutlines and alerts for CQ and Roll CallEdit CQ subscription newsletters such as Morning Briefing, CQ Senate, and policy-oriented titles about budget/appropriations, health care, tech, fintech, and ESG and Roll Call newsletters such as Morning and Afternoon Headlines, At the Races, and Political Theater
Assist in the production of Roll Call newspaper, including checking page proofs, and other duties tied to newspaper production
Transfer applicable content originating on the CQ platform to Roll Call, and vice versa as needed
Coordinate with the company's tech-related teams as necessary to address site and CMS issues
Process and post documents and amendments to the CQ site
Perform quality analysis of all content to ensure CQ Roll Call standards are met
Other news production tasks as assigned
What Sets you Apart:
Bachelor's Degree in journalism or related discipline, or at least seven years of relevant work experience for newspapers and news-oriented websites
Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively
Knowledge of Congress, the White House, and the federal budget and appropriations process
Experience in a Washington bureau or state capital is a plus
Strong news judgment, excellent editing skills, and mastery of grammar and AP style
Strong interpersonal skills
Experience with WordPress, PhotoShop, HTML and XML
Experience with InDesign and InCopy is a plus
Working knowledge of SEO for news websites
