Job Overview

A company seeks an Attorney – Mortgage Origination in Charlotte, North Carolina, to provide legal support for residential mortgage origination activities. The attorney will advise on conventional conforming, government-insured and guaranteed, jumbo, high-net-worth, and customized mortgage products while partnering with business, operations, compliance, risk, and product teams on regulatory requirements, operational practices, product development, and strategic initiatives.

Duties

• Provide legal advice and strategic guidance concerning conventional and government-insured or guaranteed residential mortgage origination products, processes, and initiatives.
• Advise business partners on jumbo, high-net-worth, asset-based, relationship-based, and other customized mortgage lending programs.
• Analyze legal issues involving mortgage product development, underwriting practices, pricing, disclosures, advertising, and digital applications.
• Advise on secondary market eligibility requirements and other legal considerations affecting mortgage products and transactions.
• Partner with compliance, risk, audit, operations, and product teams to identify, assess, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks.
• Provide legal support for regulatory examinations and inquiries, audits, investigations, litigation, and remediation initiatives involving mortgage lending.
• Support strategic projects involving technology modernization, digital mortgage initiatives, automation, artificial intelligence, and operational process improvements.
• Interpret applicable mortgage lending laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and regulatory developments and provide practical guidance to business stakeholders.

Requirements

• Minimum of six years of legal practice experience, including substantial experience supporting residential mortgage lending activities.
• Demonstrated experience advising on residential mortgage origination products and processes.
• Strong understanding of mortgage industry business practices and operational workflows.
• Experience supporting a large bank, mortgage lender, or other financial institution is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of conventional conforming mortgage programs and agency requirements is preferred.
• Experience with jumbo, private banking, high-net-worth, wealth management-affiliated, or customized mortgage origination programs is preferred.
• Familiarity with mortgage secondary market requirements and investor guidelines is preferred.
• Experience interacting with federal and state regulatory agencies and examination teams is preferred.
• Experience supporting digital mortgage platforms, automated underwriting systems, electronic closing initiatives, and product innovation is preferred.
• Ability to travel approximately 5% of the time.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.

Education

• Juris Doctor or equivalent doctorate-level law degree.

Certifications

• Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
