Job Overview

A law firm seeks a patent agent specializing in biomedical devices for its Palo Alto, CA office. The ideal candidate will have over three years of experience in patent prosecution and a background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related medical device technology.

Duties

• Prepare draft patent applications and incorporate scientific aspects of inventions.
• Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices.
• Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions.
• Investigate general and specific technologies as needed.
• Discuss scientific aspects of inventions with clients and inventors.
• Identify and analyze complex patent issues and implement solutions.
• Act as liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office.
• Communicate professionally with clients, lawyers, and staff.
• Organize and prioritize tasks efficiently under time constraints.
• Stay updated on technology trends and patent prosecution issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related field preferred.
• Qualified to sit for the patent bar; preferably licensed to practice before USPTO.
• Strong investigative and problem resolution skills.
• Advanced oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to organize and prioritize tasks under time constraints.
• Familiarity with prosecution docketing systems.

Education

• Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred; Master's or PhD in a related field is advantageous.

Certifications

• Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills

• Advanced working knowledge of research principles and methods.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse individuals.
• Proficiency in Outlook, Word, and Excel programs.
• Knowledge of time management software.

Benefits

• This role may be hybrid, requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office, with up to two days remote work.
