Job Overview

A law firm seeks an Associate Attorney to join its office in Richmond, VA. This role involves supporting the Professional Responsibility and Attorney Discipline practice, representing lawyers and other licensed professionals in bar complaints, disciplinary investigations, and licensure proceedings. The associate will work closely with experienced counsel and assume substantive responsibilities early in their tenure.

Duties

• Defend lawyers in Virginia State Bar matters at all stages, including appeals to the Supreme Court of Virginia.
• Interview respondents and witnesses, review client files, and draft responses to complaints.
• Analyze conduct under Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct and develop defense strategies.
• Draft motions, briefs, and prepare exhibits and witnesses for hearings.
• Assist in defending other licensed professionals before Virginia regulatory boards.
• Support advisory work, including ethics opinions and trust accounting compliance.
• Handle related civil matters, such as legal malpractice defense, in state and federal court.

Requirements

• J.D. and active membership in good standing with the Virginia State Bar.
• 3-5+ years of litigation experience, preferably with evidentiary hearings or trials.
• Experience or strong interest in professional responsibility or regulatory proceedings.
• Excellent research and writing skills with sound judgment.
• Ability to handle highly sensitive information with discretion.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple matters independently and as part of a team.
• Fluency or strong proficiency in Spanish is highly desired.

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
