Job Overview

A law firm seeks a senior tax associate or special counsel with expertise in the taxation of financial products or instruments in New York City, NY. The ideal candidate will possess over six years of relevant tax experience at a law or accounting firm, with substantive knowledge of U.S. federal income tax treatment of financial instruments and products.

Duties

• Advise investment funds on U.S. tax issues related to debt instruments, derivatives, and commodities.
• Provide guidance on debt instruments, including original issue discount and contingent payment debt instruments.
• Analyze derivatives and structured products under relevant tax rules.
• Address withholding tax issues for cross-border financial products.
• Consult on the taxation of hedge funds and other pooled investment vehicles.

Requirements

• Experience advising financial institutions and asset managers on tax treatment of financial products.
• Familiarity with IRS guidance, Treasury regulations, and case law.
• Strong technical drafting skills for tax opinions and memoranda.
• Ability to work with trading desks and capital markets teams.
• Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Experience supervising and mentoring junior team members.
• Business development and client relationship management skills are a plus.

Education

• Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent degree.

Certifications

• Licensed to practice law or eligible for admission in the jurisdiction.
