Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Tax Controversy Counsel to join their Tax practice group in Washington, D.C., with a strong preference for New York. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in federal and state tax controversy matters and the ability to manage a broad range of issues independently.

Duties

• Represent clients in federal and state tax controversy matters.
• Manage IRS and state audits, examinations, and administrative appeals.
• Handle collections matters, penalty abatements, and installment agreements.
• Engage in offers in compromise and voluntary disclosures.
• Draft protests, responses to Information Document Requests, pleadings, and motions.
• Collaborate effectively with clients, taxing authorities, and legal teams.

Requirements

• 8-10 years of relevant experience in a law firm, government, or similar environment.
• Experience representing clients before the U.S. Tax Court and in other tax litigation preferred.
• Strong legal research and writing skills.
• Ability to navigate complex subject matter quickly and effectively.

Education

• J.D. required.
• LL.M. in Taxation preferred but not required.

Certifications

• Active bar admission in the jurisdiction of intended practice.
