Job Overview

A law firm seeks an Associate Attorney for its Trusts & Estates practice in San Diego, California. This full-time role supports senior leadership in estate planning, trust administration, probate proceedings, and fiduciary representation. The ideal candidate will manage a diverse caseload, handle contested disputes, and provide strategic counsel to clients during sensitive matters.

Duties

• Draft and review wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and related estate planning documents, including federal gift and estate tax returns.


• Prepare probate petitions, trust administration pleadings, accountings, and settlement agreements for contested and uncontested matters.


• Represent clients in probate court hearings, mediations, settlement conferences, and trials, including examining witnesses and arguing motions.


• Manage all aspects of trusts and estates matters, identifying key legal and financial issues involving asset distribution and fiduciary duties.


• Advise clients on estate planning options and dispute resolution strategies, maintaining compassionate communication with beneficiaries and trustees.


• Conduct legal research on trusts, estates, tax rules, and local procedures, preparing memoranda and strategic recommendations.


• Supervise paralegals and support staff, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, court rules, and filing deadlines.


• Participate in professional development activities and contribute to firm growth through business development initiatives.


 

Requirements

• Active member of the State Bar of California.


• One to five years of recent experience in trusts and estates practice areas.


• Ability to multitask and manage a large caseload while fostering teamwork and collaboration.


• Self-starter with strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.


• Proficiency in MS Office and modern law firm practice management software.


 

Education

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.


 

Certifications

• Active license to practice law in the State of California.


 

Skills

• Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical reasoning abilities.


• Sound judgment and attention to detail in high-pressure or emotionally charged situations.


• Experience with NumberCruncher and law firm client management software is preferred.


• Strong command of English, including grammar, usage, form, and style.


• Ability to analyze financial information, including asset valuations and tax returns.
