Reporting to the division General Manager, the Director of Engineering is responsible for execution of all product development for the division. The purpose of this position is three-fold: to provide strong people leadership for the engineering team; to lead the engineering team to innovate in next generation products with new technologies and applications; and to actively participate in the business leadership team to deliver business results.
Measures of Success:
Creates an environment that encourages collaboration, fosters innovation, and stimulates high performance in the engineering team.
Effectively interacts with all functional areas as well as with customers, suppliers, field sales, CMs/ODMs, and division management.
Manages engineering resources to meet both product development schedules and customer/marketing requirements, creating specifications addressing the relevant requirements document in conjunction with documented ISO9001 product development processes.
Successfully balances new product development and sustaining product projects competing for engineering resources.
Maintains high quality standards in a high-volume environment.
Provides effective leadership: role-models Trimble values, challenges employees to be extraordinary, embraces ambiguity and complexity, and utilizes coaching as a way to grow and improve employee capabilities.
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
5 to 10 years of engineering management experience, building, leading and motivating a team of hardware and software engineers in a partially matrixed environment
Clear communication skills, both verbal and written.
E
xperience working through complex technical issues with major customers and suppliers.
Strong analytical skills.
Proven experience with innovation and new technology evaluation and adaptation.
Desirable Experience/Skills:
Track record managing development projects combining both innovation and tactical management.
Designing products combining sensitive RF receivers, RF transmitters and/or digital circuits that require agency certifications such as FCC, CE.
Product development for the harsh environments found in telecommunication, automotive and/or heavy equipment applications.
Managing outsourced development projects, ODMs and/or projects mixing internal and outsourced engineering resources.
Working with outside certification and test labs.
Familiarity with hardware and software quality assurance processes.
Beneficial Experience/Skills:
Familiarity with GNSS, UWB, RFID, WiFi, cellular and/or spread-spectrum radio technologies and applications.
Working knowledge of Kalman filtering techniques.
