Director, Intellectual Property
Duties: Working closely with senior leadership to understand the needs of the Institute and offer guidance on intellectual property matters. Designing and implementing an intellectual property strategy aligned with the Broad’s mission and goals. Leading, managing and mentoring the Institute’s IP legal team. Overseeing and managing the Broad’s intellectual property portfolio. Evaluating the scientific and novel aspects of Broad inventions and patentability. Managing the patenting process for inventions generated from multi-disciplinary research and often jointly-owned by multiple Broad partner institutions, including management of process, costs/budget and attorney selection. Working closely with the head of Legal, the CBO, and the OSAP team to identify optimal IP and commercialization strategies, with input from scientific leadership, institutional leadership, and external advisors, as appropriate. Partnering with the Chief Development Officer and Senior Director, Office of Sponsored Research on grant-related IP matters. Maintaining patent portfolios strategically and cost-effectively in the appropriate geographies, which will include identifying IP rights of high value to Broad and potential synergies across portfolios. Overseeing OSAP’s government reporting and compliance effort. Effectively and regularly communicating with Broad investigators and tech transfer offices of Broad partner institutions. Providing education to the Broad community on intellectual property matters. Managing outside intellectual property counsel and the Institute’s IP budget. Drafting and negotiating the intellectual property-related terms of the Institute’s complex strategic agreements. Supporting alliance management and serving as a member of the Joint Steering Committee for key partnerships. Generally promoting and supporting Broad policies, procedures, mission, values and ethics.
