Job Description
The Washington Post is looking for an assistant editor for nonfiction books to assign and edit book reviews.
The editor will help drive books coverage digitally and in print, broaden it in innovative ways and expand the social media presence for our reviews. The position requires a careful, thoughtful editor with a deep knowledge of books, an eagerness to stay ahead of the latest releases and proficiency in working with freelancers. The editor will push reviewers to produce sharp, well-organized criticism that is both insightful and fair. The editor will help select books for review from the hundreds that cross our desk and will find new voices to expand our diverse stable of writers.
The job requires cooperation with designers, photo editors and copy editors to produce outstanding-looking pieces as well as rigorously edited ones. Before making assignments, the editor will carefully vet reviewers for potential conflicts of interest to ensure that no predisposition or bias toward an author, positive or negative, slips into our reviews. The editor will demonstrate a willingness to develop strong working relationships with book industry publicists to smooth the delivery of books to The Post and to reviewers and to guarantee The Post has timely access to embargoed titles.
This position is based in our Washington newsroom and is not eligible for remote work.
The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.
Interested candidates should upload a résumé with links to their work and a cover letter outlining the experience and approach they would bring to the role to our jobs portal
by Apr. 4. Your cover letter should be addressed to Nonfiction Books Editor Steven Levingston and Managing Editor Krissah Thompson.
