Duties: Responsibility for the property, liability and workers’ compensation insurance programs of the institution. In concert with the Director of Environmental Health and Safety and numerous other institutional stakeholder, identify and analyze property and casualty risks and propose risk financing endeavors to the Director of Enterprise Risk Management and Insurance that support the University’s strategic objectives. Administer, monitor and maintain the workers’ compensation program, the occupational health program and the transitional work program. Direct and supervise the third party administrators, the managed care organization and outside legal counsel in regard to workers’ compensation claims as they proceed thought the administrative hearing process in the Ohio Industrial Commission and litigation in the Courts of Ohio. Assist the Director of Enterprise Risk Management and Insurance with the preparation of a budget and the selection of third party administrators, managed care organizations and other insurance and workers’ compensation related services. Assist the Director of Enterprise Risk Management and Insurance with the negotiation and implementation of the University’s property and liability insurance programs with insurance brokers and its carriers. Supervise the University Insurance Claims Coordinator with bodily injury and property damage liability claims arising from the negligent act of University employees not addressed by the University’s Office of Legal Affairs. Administer, monitor and maintain the workers’ compensation program, the occupational health program and the transitional work program. Direct and supervise the third party administrator, the managed care organization and outside legal counsel in regard to workers’ compensation claims through the administrative process in the Ohio Industrial Commission and litigation in the Courts of Ohio. Participate in and influence the efforts of the Inter-University Council (IUC) Insurance Consortium to reduce the risk management costs of the University. Serve of the underwriting committee of the pool which is responsible for the transfer of risk of the IUC members. Notify the University’s insurance carriers with respect to large liability losses in a timely fashion in coordination with the Office of Legal Affairs. Review, evaluate and approve or disapprove all workers’ compensation claims settlements proposed by the third party administrator, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation or outside counsel. Consult with the University Office of Legal Affairs on a regular basis concerning current legal issues. Perform policy and coverage analysis, make recommendations to address coverage gaps regarding complex and unique risk exposures and field insurance coverage questions from University staff members. Maintain and provide workers’ compensation claims data regarding employee injury and incident loss runs. Maintain accurate records of insurance claims costs to employ loss analysis for the identification of trends and the revision of financing strategies or opportunities for risk control. Responsible for the supervision of the University Insurance – Worker’s Compensation Claims Coordinator. May also give work direction to division administrative support staff, interns and/or student employees. Frequently partners with the Office of Legal Affairs under the supervision of the director. Contacts are throughout the University and involve coordinating major activities that involve sensitive situations. Advises units on insurance and indemnification sections of contracts. Frequent contact with students and parents advising them on risk management issues and handling problems. Oversees department which is responsible for working closely with almost every University unit as well as students for issues involving claims against university, student club insurance program, student health insurance and events.
