University Counsel (Senior Counsel)
The candidate will Manage, with support from outside counsel, high-profile, single plaintiff and multi-plaintiff litigation matters. Collaborate with various stakeholders, provide legal advice, assist in creating overall litigation strategy, and manage a variety of healthcare litigation including mass torts, medical and dental malpractice, personal injury, and employment matters. The position will also manage pre- and post-litigation compliance and health care issues. Actively supervise outside counsel. Proactively advise senior leadership on how to accomplish business objectives without undue risk. Keep leadership and stakeholders apprised of developments. Assist in management of risk incidents and oversight. Act as a trusted advisor and establish rapport and working relationships with employees at all levels. Encourage the use of in-house legal counsel as a preventative measure. Collaborate with senior leadership to review and develop university policies. Minimum education: JD degree and active member of the California bar. Minimum professional experience: 7 years; 8+ years highly preferred. Strong preference for mass tort, class action, medical malpractice, multi-district litigation, and general healthcare litigation experience in a firm and/or in-house setting; experience working with insurance carriers is a plus. Minimum Education: J.D. Minimum Experience: 7 years Minimum Field of Expertise: J.D. and member of California Bar. General business law with extensive litigation experience.
