Job Description:
Proposition
You will undertake experimental R&D in Shell’s global Center of Expertise for Bio-technology, a significantly growing area that will enable Shell to thrive in the Energy Transition. This includes biofuels, Nature Based Solutions, renewable feedstocks, other bioproducts and advanced biosciences.
Where you fit in
As we transition to a low carbon energy system, bio-feedstocks and bio-processes will become increasingly important in the coming decades. You will work with other laboratory specialists and researchers in the Bio-technology team at STCH undertaking laboratory experimentation in support of the rapidly growing bio-based activities across Shell. As part of the Bio-technology laboratory team, you will support the business goals for the Low Carbon Fuels business (Advanced Biofuels, Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), HVO); Nature Based Solutions (natural ecosystems as carbon sinks); Shell Chemicals; and Upstream via microbial driven processes. There is also a significant Bio R&D programme in the Long-Range Research (LRR) programme that you will provide laboratory support for.
What’s the role?
You will be involved in all aspects of the day to day running of biological processes and experiments in STCH’s world class microbiological and bioengineering laboratory. The lab has state of the art equipment including a fermentation suite, microbrewery, enzyme reactors, genomic sequencers and cell analysers. You will lead lab experimental activities (for example, genomic and metagenomic) in collaboration with project scientists at Shell and at our partners Universities.
Specifically, you will:
plan and execute experiments on microbial processes, enzymatic processes and quantification through metagenomics, hydrolysis and fermentation in process units covering the scale 1l to 100l
provide technical support to microbiological experiments focused on the development and scale-up of novel microorganisms capable of either liquid or solid-state fermentation of biomass to value-added products
operate and maintain state-of-the-art bio-analytical equipment, including MinION and MiSeq DNA sequencers, FACS flow cytometry and HPLC
ensure the lab facilities integrity and controls around working with microorganisms and GMOs (e.g. sterile technique, sterilization methods) in accordance with the strict requirements of a BSL2 lab
record, interpret and report experimental data, including authoring and co-authoring formal reports and presentations, to agreed deadlines; prepare and maintain (micro)biological test procedures
train new hires and interns in biological procedures and safe ways of working such as hydrolysis, fermentation, microbial stock control (glycerol stocking), appropriate sterility methods and biological handling.
act as a role model in demonstrating safe behaviours and provide leadership in the execution of HSE management systems, in addition support HSSE activities (MOC, PtW, CISpro, GMO control zones).
What we need from you?
Working in a world class bioscience lab, you will need to demonstrate a commitment to HSSE and to develop a culture where safety is paramount. Furthermore, you will have:
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Bachelor's degree in Microbiology or a related bioscience.
At least 3 years relevant experience.
Significant lab R&D experience in a GMO and BSL level 2 biological laboratory.
Significant experience in the delivery of project-based activities in a research and development environment, specifically experience in genetic extraction, DNA extraction, enzyme hydrolysis, fermentation and solid-state fermentation, including propagation and control.
Proven experience of running and maintaining fermentation and hydrolysis and FACS equipment.
Knowledge of current fermentation or enzyme catalysed conversion techniques.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and in teams. Designing and contributing to experimental test programs. Interpreting experimental data, concluding, presenting and reporting. Leadership and coaching of less experienced staff. Leadership in the execution of HSE management systems.
