Job Description:

Business Overview:

Shell intends to develop and implement solutions that will enable Shell to thrive in the Energy Transition. In support of this growth agenda, you will be supporting R&D on the conversion of CO2 into “Dense Energy Carriers” or “Solar Fuels” starting from green (intermittent) power as feedstock. A key element in producing Solar Fuels is capturing CO2 from either at point sources or the atmosphere, and to use it as recycled or sustainable feedstock for these Dense Energy Carriers. In addition, the program looks into the alternative use of methane as feedstock for value-add products, i.e. not just as heating value agent. Assessing emerging technologies relevant for the energy transition and the wider Power to Products developments (using high-fidelity optimization models) is a core element of this team. If you are a highly motivated candidate that is committed to support the energy transition with innovative R&D, exploring new capabilities and expertise for Shell, and to groom new resources in the field, and also to supervise a team of highly professional researchers and technicians then this role is an opportunity for you to realize this ambition.

Where you fit in -

The energy transition requires the development of new business opportunities, together with the development of new technologies and the demonstration of these new technologies in tangible projects. This agenda is underpinned by this Long Range Research program in PT that aims at de-risking and deployment of technology at a time line longer than the usual business cycle which in principle rely on “off-the-shelf” technology. The program aims for the development of fundamentals and capabilities in new science areas, using collaborative efforts with academia, start-up companies, individual 3rd party technology providers and quite often supported by leveraged funding from governments. In addition, the program aims to accelerate deployment of the results from D0 developments into D1-2 activities. In the new VP-ship of “Gas Processing and Conversion” you are going to be part of the GM-ship of “Long Range Research & Experimentation”. The GM-ship includes a wide range of experts over the different areas of catalysis, electrochemistry and modeling of future energy systems. Next to the core team, the platform also heavily depends on pulling in expertise from other capabilities in Shell, such as from the Biodomain, Computational and Data Sciences, Electrolysis Technology and Integrated Systems Modelling.

What's the role -

This role focusses on producing dense energy carriers from green power. A significant part of this role focusses on electrochemical conversion of CO2 to valuable molecules like CO and Ethelene. Further, this role focusses on novel concepts of capture and conversion of CO2, and how to integrate these technology solutions in facilities. Affinity with renewables required, and a background in electro chemistry.

The role is responsible for supporting the Team Lead LRR and Sr. Research Scientists in oversight and managing of project budgets when serving as project lead; external projects are typically on the order of $50-500k/year depending on scope.

More specifically, your role will include:

• Potentially support a global, cross-disciplinary team of approximately 4-5 researchers as a sub-team in the LRR program with a focus on “water and CO2 electrolysis fundamentals”

• Execute R&D projects reporting to the Team Lead or Sr. Researchers LRR

Set-up new external collaborations to gain access to technologies for the LRR platform strategy
Project execution with 3rd parties of existing and new projects in the portfolio to drive to deployment or hand-over of mid term opportunities from D0 to D1-D2 to the New Energies business or assets
Regular technology evaluations and support to technical due diligence efforts from the business and Shell Ventures, as well as GameChanger
Work closely with the New Energies and conventional businesses and assets stakeholders to drive activities to hand-over to the business, according to set key performance indicators and agreed hand-over points in support of the team lead
Supporting the growth of the e-lab in Amsterdam, supervising and supporting the various electrochemistry activities.
Project execution and supervision of various projects, in close collaboration with experimentalists and academic staff (post docs etc).
Driving various CO2 conversion activities in the LRR platform

• Knowledge maintenance and sharing

Share knowhow obtained from external collaboration within Shell via reports, presentations and personal communication
Asist the Team Lead and Sr Researchers LRR Platform in projects and activities

• External representation

Represent Shell in selected external bodies and at conferences

Skills and Requirement

What we need from you -

It is your experience in project funnel management and technology development in a D0-D1 space, as well as your sound engineering knowhow -particularly in the field of electrochemistry and electrochemical conversion- which will support the dynamic R&D environment in the LRR Platform. You will be closely collaborating with internal P&T experts, as well as stakeholders in the conventional and new energies business. Affinity with renewables required, proven track record in electrochemistry.

Furthermore you will have:

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
At least three (3) working experience.
University qualification in technical discipline (Electrochemistry, or electro Chemical Engineering)
Proven track record in electrochemistry.
Proven track record in electrochemical (CO2) conversion.
Proven track-record in technical due diligence or project execution in D0-D1 space
Some experience with negotiating & implementing commercial agreements is a plus
Fundamental understanding of technologies to be evaluated, such as: renewable power generation, CO2 capture and conversion systems, electrochemistry processes, and electrolysis.
Proven track-record in technology development in the field of electrochemistry in general and CO2 electro-catalysis in particular.
Demonstrated commitment to HSSE
Proven track record in maintaining and developing experimental electrochemistry labs
Ability to link business drivers to technical understanding and vice versa
Proven eagerness and ability to build expertise in an area relatively new to Shell
Strong Learner mindset
Strong team player whilst also ability to act autonomously
Work effectively with 3rd parties
Develop effective relationships with external stakeholders and experts on a working level
