VP Legal Affairs & General Counsel
Duties: Reports directly to the President of the University and provides legal counsel to the Board of Trustees, the President and other officers on all legal matters relevant to the University, including, the following: academic misconduct, corporate law and transactional matters, tax exempt bond financings, contracts, tort claims and medical malpractice litigation, research and grant regulation and funding, health and medical affairs, Title IX and all federal and state compliance and regulatory affairs, real estate, construction, intellectual property, labor and employment, employee benefits, civil rights, student affairs, taxation, administrative procedures and charitable giving. Serves the University community in several critical ways, ranging from conducting legal research on behalf of a college or unit to interpreting laws, rulings and regulations to reviewing and assisting with the preparation of University policies and procedures. Essential duties in this role include serving as the University's representative in supervising the work of outside counsel and in coordinating the University's legal affairs with federal, state and local government entities as well as with affiliated entities, such as Athletics, the Foundation, Health and Physicians; supervising a staff of lawyers and support staff and overseeing the legal activities of the Office of Risk Management and the Academic Health Center.
