Intellectual Property Manager/Technology Transfer Associate
Duties: Reporting to the Portfolio Director or a Senior Intellectual Property (IP) Manager, works to identify and protect inventions resulting from university research. Through interactions with faculty members, staff, students, and outside counsel, the IP Manager manages patent prosecution and disclosure-related tasks. Evaluates new invention disclosure summaries including conducting inventor interviews, preliminary prior art analysis, and coordinating with licensing associates for commercialization activity. Evaluates inventions for intellectual property protection probability and works closely with IP counsel to draft and file appropriate IP protection, i.e., patent applications, copyrights, etc. Interfaces with internal and external counsel to coordinate patent decisions within a fixed budget. Focuses on inventor outreach and contact for patent related matters. Recommends a technology transfer path for new inventions (e.g., patent, copyright, waive or assign rights back to the inventors. Develops IP protection strategy for inventions retained by the university in consultation with licensing staff, business analysts, inventors and IP counsel. Implements the strategy. Tracks and fulfills filing obligations for licensed technologies in portfolio. Establishes and maintains contacts with industry IP managers, patent counsel and representatives at other academic institutions. Directs patent counsel in the preparation, filing and prosecution of U.S. and international patent applications. Maintains a CPI docket for tracking filing obligations for their assigned portfolio. Works with Safesforce and Inteum to review IP for encumbrances or other issues before marketing material is sent to potential licensees.
