Ruby on Rails development for custom e-commerce backend
I currently run an e-commerce site on Shopify, which sells super niche artistic products to nerdy hobbyists. My goal is to replace Shopify with our own bespoke solution, given the very limited flexibility of Shopifys admin tools. I have a background in Rails development myself, so Ill be closely involved in architectural decisions, and I care a lot about code quality and readability along with solid unit testing.
The front-end functionality of my project is a fairly simple standard e-commerce site, but on the back-end it integrates in a fairly complicated way with many different third-party services for accounting, shipping, email, inventory, etc. Currently Shopify acts as a data hub around which all these services orbit. However, I would like to write a new custom Rails app to replace Shopify so that I can have more control over the data flow, create more business process automations to make back-office tasks easier, and also to have more flexibility in the design of my site than Shopify templates offer. As such, Im looking for a developer to help me implement the new sites e-commerce front end, and to code the extensive admin back-end functionality and integrations.
I am currently working with a designer and front-end developer to turn our Figma mockups into HTML and CSS (with static/dummy data), which should be done in the next few weeks. In the meantime, I would like to select a developer for the web app. We can start making some architectural decisions together and perhaps begin to work on back-end integrations and data modeling while we wait for the front-end templates to be complete. Some of the first work a developer would need to do for me is actually not coding but rather researching APIs and helping me think through how to architect the app and write out into a specification how the app will behave.
I prefer the development process to proceed as follows: 1) write a bullet-point list in plain English describing how the code should work, 2) write unit tests that verify this behavior, spending a lot of time anticipating and testing for edge cases and 3) actually do the implementation, starting first with the data models.
I anticipate that the project will be full-time work over the course of a few months. Since this is a pretty serious commitment, I would like to spend some time on a video chat interviewing and getting to know a few potential candidates before making a decision. I am a Rails core contributor and have fairly extensive background in web development, so I have fairly strong opinions about writing clean, idiomatic Ruby/Rails code and hope to find a developer who is on the same wavelength. :)
A huge plus would be familiarity with basic double-entry accounting concepts (debits and credits), familiarity with inventory tracking, and/or previous experience with e-commerce integrations like Stripe, but these arent absolutely required.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts about potentially working together! If interested, please send me a pitch and then maybe we can set up a quick video chat interview. If you have a public Github or Stackoverflow profile, please do share.
Thanks!
