Job Description:
Do you have a passion for chemistry and the catalysts that are often at the heart of the most important conversion processes in the industry? Then your most rewarding next career move could be to join Catalyst Technology in Shell, where we use human ingenuity, innovation, and technology to catalytically unlock more and cleaner energy for the years ahead!
Where you fit in –
The Gas Conversion Catalysts team in Amsterdam and Houston focuses on developing catalysts applied in Environmental, Downstream, and Integrated Gas applications. These technologies enable Shell to improve the performance of its existing assets as well as to thrive through the Energy Transition via opportunities in CO2 abatement and hydrogen.
What’s the role?
In this role, you will be responsible for leading and supporting R&D projects in a variety of Energy Transition related projects, often as and when these projects arise. You will work with different stakeholders depending on the technology and commercialization path. For example, you may work with colleagues in Shell’s Long Range Research department for longer-term opportunities, and with colleagues from Gas Technology and Shell Catalysts & Technology to help commercialize Methane Abatement Catalysts. The variety of projects expected to be supported by this role provides a unique technical broadening and deepening opportunity in high-profile Energy Transition fields.
More specific responsibilities for this role include:
Working closely with the Shell Catalysts & Technology business to understand their R&D needs.
Designing R&D projects to cover these needs, with realistic timelines, clear milestones, resource estimates, and transparent governance structures.
Executing R&D projects by designing new catalysts and collaborating with a team of Associate Researchers in the laboratory to ensure the new catalysts are made according to design and then analyzed and tested.
Working with equipment design engineers to ensure new catalysts can be deployed in fit-for-purpose reactors.
Working with our own catalyst production sites and/or toll manufacturers to scale up promising leads towards commercialization.
Reporting on R&D progress to stakeholders and peers, and ensuring relevant learnings are captured and documented. This may include patent action.
What we need from you -
A legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
You have at least a Master’s degree (Ph.D is an advantage) in Chemistry, Material Science or Chemical Engineering with experience in heterogeneous catalysis, materials science, surface science, inorganic chemistry, and/or physical chemistry.
You have at least 8 years of experience in developing new heterogeneous catalysts, including design, preparation, characterization, and testing.
You are able to coordinate multi-disciplinary support teams.
You have excellent communication and customer relationship skills—vital attributes when developing existing or new businesses.
You are a visible proponent of a Learner Mindset, bringing back learnings to the organization and exchanging best practices.
