We have complex custom application on our website. It is a custom character selector and a selector to pick book pages. The back end then gathers the PNG elements selected (hair, eyes, custom features) and the hi-res backgrounds chosen and creates a print ready PDF that we download on the back end of the website and send the PDF to the printer and then the book is shipped to the customer. Most of the website is in PHP and editing is currenly being done in Github.
Struggling with a solution for generating a print ready PDF that is a more compact file size. Currenly all elements to build the PDF are made of PNGs in layers. The character body, then hair, then eyes, glasses etc. That is layered over the background and text is added. Right now the files are about 76mg and take sometimes 20 minutes to download. 
Searching for an expert level PHP developer who might have an easy solution we havent considered.
